Plants hermaphroditic, caespitose (rooting at the nodes), annual. Culms geniculate or decumbent; internodes solid, glabrous, terete; nodes glabrous. Leaves cauline, not distinctly distichous; sheaths terete, margins open; auricles absent; ligules membra nous; blades flat, linear, pseudopetiolate or not pseudopetiolate, lax, apex acuminate. Panicles of racemose branches (rarely a raceme), open, terminal, sheaths subtending inflorescence not inflated and spathe-like, primary branches unbranched, digitate or subdigitate or alternate, spreading, not aromatic; branches glabrous; pedicels not with a longitudinal groove, hairs ascending, semi-terete. Spikelets paired (ternate at branch apex) at each inflorescence node, similar in size and shape, disarticulati on below the glumes, dorsiventrally compressed, sessile spikelets fertile, pedicellate spikelets fertile. Pedicellate spikelets well developed and fertile.
