17 November 2000 |
Our Fall meeting will be at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin. See the "map and directions" link from their headquarters page for location info (4801 LA CROSSE AVE).
Admission is free for FTC, just tell the folks at the gate that you are with the FTC and they will tell you where to park and point you to the meeting room (Library). We are scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m., break at noon for lunch (on your own, best option probably the LBJWC cafe on the grounds), and continue with an afternoon session (1- 3:30).
Success of the ARP proposal and funded work this year forces our agenda to be focused on those FTC objectives that will be funded by the Coordinating Board. I suggest we devote the morning session to topics that need immediate attention, i.e., review of content developed in 2000 and discussion of how we are going to provide this via www.texasflora.org in 2001.
This initial funding for web-based Texas floristics represents an expression of public/educational interest that can be used to expand our base of support for continued development of a digital flora of Texas. Thus, a portion of the afternoon session might be dedicated to discussion on this topic, i.e., how can we best leverage this to secure long-term support for the enterprise.
Specific agenda items will be added below as they are developed via email exchange over the next few weeks.

Possible notions to consider and discuss for supplementing/extending support for the enterprise:
1. Trolling for corporate sponsors
2. Paying more attention to other sources of State-level public support/interaction (Texas agencies or programs)
3. FTC institutional membership dues?
4. Linkage to Federal agencies initiatives - See, for instance, NSF's Information Technology Research (ITR) Program, now in its 2nd year and now supporting applications of IT for Science - Biology Directorate is involved - Group pre-proposals are due 27-29 November, with full proposal due in April. We could discuss elements to be included in a pre-proposal. See NSF Program Announcement for more detail.
