The "Herbarium Specimen Browser" system referenced in the proposal (URL 4) presents the user with selection menu panel on the right portion of the screen and a larger 'content' panel on the left.  As indicated by this portion of the default, opening content panel:

    Selection criteria:
Showing only specimens taken from non-cultivated material
    Counties: all
    Herbaria: all

    232 families, 1610 genera, 6660 species, 130232 specimens (specimens)(map)
    Family Acanthaceae (19 genera, 53 species, 578 specimens) (specimens)(map)
    Family Aceraceae (1 genus, 9 species, 226 specimens) (specimens)(map)
    Family Achatocarpaceae (1 genus, 2 species, 19 specimens) (specimens)(map)
    Family Agavaceae (5 genera, 11 species, 30 specimens) (specimens)(map)...........

the user is initially presented with an alphabetical listing of all families represented in the database.  Selection of the linked family name will expand the page to offer a full listing of genera which can be further expanded by selection of the genus name to produce all species of the genus represented by specimen records.  As indicated by the insert above, each listing line carries a numerical summary of data available and two active options.  User selection of the 'specimens' option will replace the taxonomic listing in the content panel with a text listing  of label data from associated specimens.  Using a 'toggle' button on the selection menu panel, this list can be examined in either full or abbreviated form.  The 'map' option also provides two presentation options; 'specimens' or 'species'.  Maps resulting from selection of both options for the family Asteraceae, the largest family in the Texas flora (23, 629 specimens in the database):

This application of the 'diversity mapping' systems initially developed for the 'endemics' and Helianthus prototypes (additional materials, pages 1 and 2) allow immediate visualiztion of a complex data array and, with a mouse click on any country, a full text listing of all elements (in this case, specimens representing the Asteraceae) present.  With only ca. 10% of the available data present, maps derived from the current data set reflect a 'source' bias (over 50% of the specmens are from TAES/TAMU in College Station) that will diminish as efforts to build the database proceed.  The maps provide an immediate pointer to areas lacking specimen data, in this case Delta County (extreme northeast) has no records for this large family.
