Cocaine falls under Canada's Narcotic Control Act. The term "narcotic" is applied only to the opiate drugs; however, this Act deals with other illicit drugs such as cocaine and Cannabis.

If tried by summary conviction, a first offense for cocaine possession carries a maximum penalty of a $1,000 fine and six months imprisonment. If tried by indictment, cocaine possession carries a maximum penalty of seven years imprisonment. Trafficking, importing , exporting, and possession for the purposes of trafficking are all indictable offenses and carry a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
